The role of self-control in the initiation and maintenance of physical activity in the context of dual process theories

Dual process theories assume that human behavior is controlled by both explicit (reflective) and implicit (automatic) processes. This project focuses on the interplay of explicit and implicit processes in the initiation and maintenance of regular physical activity. On the side of explicit processes, the role of intention, trait self-control and executive functions (inhibition, updating, shifting) are examined in particular and their interplay (e.g. interaction effects) with implicit processes, such as habitual behavior and affective associations, is questioned.
