Angela Relógio studied Technological Physics Engineering at the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) of the University of Lisbon. She participated in the international PhD program of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, where she earned her doctorate in Biomedical Sciences, Molecular and Cellular Biology. Subsequently, she conducted research at the Institute for Theoretical Biology (ITB) of Humboldt University Berlin and Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, completing her habilitation in Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics at Charité. Since 2014, she has led the Systems Biology of Cancer research group at Charité, where she also serves as a private lecturer. In April 2020, Angela Relógio was appointed Professor of Systems Medicine and Biostatistics at MSH Medical School Hamburg.
Teaching Activities
Angela Relógio has been involved in teaching since her studies in Lisbon. At EMBL, she participated in organizing seminars and practical courses for students, PhD candidates, and schoolteachers. She received academic teaching training at Charité, where, since 2012, she has been involved as a teaching coordinator for ITB in various programs (the modular Human Medicine curriculum, the Master's program in Molecular Medicine, and the Integrative Oncology PhD program). She teaches interdisciplinary subjects in systems and molecular medicine and bioinformatics. She believes this approach contributes to developing a new generation of physicians better prepared to tackle the challenges posed by vast amounts of genetic data. This preparation enables them to work at the interface of fundamental and translational research, advancing individual diagnostics and therapies for the benefit of patients. She has also participated in international career symposia and mentoring activities aimed at supporting students in planning their careers.
Research Focus
Angela Relógio's research group employs an interdisciplinary approach to investigate the molecular interactions of the internal biological clock with clock-regulated genes and their impact on diseases. She collaborates with national and international colleagues to explore the connections between the internal clock, physical activity, cancer, and neurodegeneration. Her team also aims to characterize the human biological clock and integrate fundamental with clinical research. The findings from this research can contribute to optimizing the timing of existing medication administration (chronotherapy). The group's research is supported by external funding, including grants from the DFG (German Research Foundation) and the BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research), with findings published in high-ranking scientific journals. Angela Relógio is a member of scientific societies, serves on editorial boards, and acts as a reviewer for numerous journals and funding organizations, including the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Medical Research Council (UK), and the European Commission's Horizon 2020 program.
