The main focus of research concentrates on the investigation of the effective factors of the respective arts therapies, as well as their elements of treatment. Mixed methods, comprised of quantitative randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and detailed qualitative data collection as well as analysis, are being applied to answer the demands of this complex field of research.
In addition to standardized measuring methods from the psychologies, specific assessment instruments of the arts therapies are utilized. Furthermore, assessment instruments are being developed and evaluated. 
In addition, IRAT is dedicated to interdisciplinary basic experimental research in cooperation with a variety of disciplines, such as the cognitive and neurosciences, art history, philosophy, sociology and psychology. Research questions revolving around perception and processing of aesthetic phenomena and experiences, as well as how they can be utilized for therapeutic purposes are being investigated.
