IMM Institute for Molecular Medicine

Biomedical research, linking basic life science research with a focus on molecular medicine

Diseases are generally associated with changes at the molecular (biochemical or biophysical) level. At the IMM, we study individual molecules in a cellular context and their impact on cell systems, organs and organisms.

Our goal is biomedical researchcombining basic life science research with a focus on molecular medicine.

What we do

  • Research with a focus on molecular medicine: cellular perception and signal processing, renal physiology, osmosensing, hereditary vascular malformations, protein quality control and related diseases, molecular function and pathophysiology of ion transport processes, cell networks, electrical and molecular properties of nerve cells, optogenetic methods, molecular neurobiology
  • Translational approach in molecular medicine research to combine molecular research and clinical trials
  • Development of research modules in teachingexperimental work in the wet laboratory; molecular and cell biological, biochemical and biophysical methods; molecular medical work processes
  • Offer of internships, theses and doctoral topics; Participation in the ERASMUS programme and graduate schools
  • Establishment of service units for electrophysiology, cell imaging and biomarker and drug testing
Research

The Institute focuses on combining basic and preclinical research in life sciences and molecular medicine. The research groups cover a wide range of fields, from cellular communication and cell physiology to cellular biochemistry and biophysics, to neuronal diversity and interconnection. A wide range of methods is applied to basic and translational questions. In addition to standard methods of molecular biology, biochemistry and cell biology, these include advanced biomedical techniques, including quantitative live cell microscopy, electrophysiological measurements.
