Das ITM steht für Forschung an der Schnittstelle zwischen Grundlagen- und klinischer Forschung. Aus Grundlagenerkenntnissen und neuen Technologien entwickeln wir innovative und sichere Medikamente, um die Prävention, Diagnose und Behandlung von Krankheiten zu verbessern.
Unser Ziel ist die biomedizinische Forschung und die Nachwuchsförderung.
Unsere Aufgaben:
- Etablierung und Weiterentwicklung von zellulären und systemischen experimentellen Modellen zur Erforschung akuter und chronischer neurodegenerativer Erkrankungen (Hirn- und Rückenmarkschädigungen, Morbus Parkinson, Autismus, Schizophrenie) sowie autoimmuner und allergischer Erkrankungen (Multiple Sklerose, Allergische Atemwegserkrankungen), der Immuntoxikologie von Arbeitsplatz-relevanten ultrafeinen Metallstäuben (u.a. Nanopartikel-Größenbereich), sowie der Identifikation von Stressmarkern
- Translationaler Ansatz und Einbeziehung von Patient:innenproben, um die Ergebnisse der Grundlagenforschung mit der klinischen Forschung zu verbinden.
- Entwicklung von Ersatzmethoden für Tierversuche nach dem 3R-Prinzip (Replacement, Reduction und Refinement) auf der Basis von organotypischen Hirnschnitten und dreidimensionalen Zellkulturmodellen (»Mini-Gehirne«, Lungen-Organoide).
- Aufbau eines hochschulinternen Beratungsservice und Core Facilities für Fluoreszenz-basierte konfokale Mikroskopie, Life-Cell-Imaging und spektrale Durchflußzytometrie.
- Einbindung der Forschungsprogramme des Instituts in nationalen und internationalen Forschungsschwerpunkten und Fachgesellschaften.
- Rekrutierung und Förderung der Nachwuchswissenschaftler:innen (naturwissenschaftliche und medizinische Doktoranden, Postdoktoranden und Forschungsgruppenleiter:innen).
- Einbindung des gelernten Fachwissens der Studierenden in die Bearbeitung der methodenbasierten Forschungsthemen und Forschungsprojekte.
Forschung
Im Zentrum der Forschung steht am Institute for Translational Medicine die biomedizinische Forschung. Vertiefte Themenbereiche der Neurologie und Immunologie bilden die Schwerpunkte des Instituts. Die hier angesiedelten Arbeitsgruppen decken dabei ein breites Themenspektrum, von Synaptopathien, Neuroregeneration, zellulärer Adaptation und Bioenergetik, Neuroinflammation, Allergien und Asthma ab. Neben wissenschaftlichen Fragestellungen werden hier auch molekular- und zellbiologische molekularbiologische, bildgebende und biochemische Methoden angewandt sowie zelluläre und organotypische Hirnschnitt-Modelle entwickelt.
