Structure of the course

In the first part of the study you do not only work out medical-scientific basics. You also acquire first practical skills. It is important to us that our students get a feeling for the patient, his needs and his care already at this early stage. At the same time, we train them to become team players who can cooperate with interdisciplinary work groups and do not lose track even in stressful situations.

The second part of the study is also referred to as a so-called clinical study section. It lasts from the fifth to the tenth semester. The focus of this section of the study is the basics of medical practice and clinical medicine. Practical clinical subjects are systematically deepened. Our students complete the practical training parts at our clinic partner, Helios Kliniken Schwerin. In five block internships in the subjects of internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, gynecology and general medicine, they expand their knowledge of differential diagnosis and therapy of important diseases. Learning takes place in small groups as well as in the clinical and outpatient everyday life of our practice partner. In addition there are medical internships, which cover a total of four months. Students can complete the internships at Helios Kliniken Schwerin or other approved clinics.

The Practical Year begins as soon as the second part of the medical exam is passed. This third and final phase of the study of human medicine differs significantly from the previous semesters, as the practical application of knowledge is now clearly in the foreground. Under experienced guidance, the students take over medical tasks in a clinic and thereby practice methods of treatment and patient handling. The PY is divided into three sections of 16 weeks each, during which students get to know the internal medicine, surgery and a station of their own choosing. Students can complete the practical year at Helios Kliniken Schwerin or other approved clinics.
