Study Program Sports Science (Bachelor of Science)

Faculty of Health Sciences (University of Applied Sciences)

The Bachelor's program in Sports Science is aimed at those interested in sports who, in addition to practical work, wish to learn more about the methodological and scientific background. The Bachelor's program is application-oriented and guarantees a broad, scientifically-based education. Students get to know sports science as a cross-sectional field of research with such disciplines such as training science, sports medicine and biomechanics.

Our graduates also undergo in-depth training in sport psychology. As such, our graduates are capable to successfully lead and conduct coaching discussions, to support sport competitions and to aid in team development strategies. As coaches or trainers of children, adolescents and adults, they can recognize problems in the training process in good time and develop suitable solutions. They are fully aware of the pedagogical importance and co-responsibility for the personality development of their protégés. Last but not least, they have a general overview of the sports industry and, thus, its potential areas of application such as sports associations, clubs and business enterprises.

We are currently establishing a teaching-learning laboratory for methodical-practical teaching and research projects for the Bachelor's program in sports science. Cooperation with sports facilities in Hamburg offers the conditions for the practical study sections. There is a close network with the partners of the MSH Academic Teaching School - state-approved vocational school for physiotherapy.

The Bachelor's program is state-recognized. The professional accreditation has been passed and is due for completion.

Course Contents and Structure

Sports Science looks at sports from a scientific perspective. Since it is an interdisciplinary subject, the bachelor's program in sports science is particularly versatile. Individual disciplines such as training and movement science, biomechanics, sports medicine, sport psychology and sport pedagogy are elementary components of the teaching course.

Theory forms the foundation
A core topic during your studies is human physiology and anatomy. Only those who have sufficient knowledge can develop training plans for children or effective training for professional athletes. But an overview of current, scientifically proven methods is also important. Do you want to enhance the performance of your protégé, or sound out his stress limits? Or would you like to create a dietary or nutrition plan? In the course of your studies, you will learn how to transfer your scientific knowledge into your daily professional life. And during the six semesters, you will also learn to integrate psychological and social aspects into your work.

Practice brings variation into your studies
The theoretical section is flanked by practical training units. In these modules, you gain hands-on experience with individual, team and outdoor sports, as well as with strength and endurance training. A 20-week mandatory internship gives you the chance to identify your dream job in greater detail and to specialize further according to your individual interests.

A plethora of development opportunities
The bachelor's program is based on current scientific findings and professional practice. Our students therefore develop into competent sports scientists. Their interdisciplinary and fundamental know-how qualifies them for many professional fields. In addition, bachelor graduates have the opportunity of taking a consecutive master's program and pursuing an academic career. The MSH offers interesting programs, such as the Master's in Sports Science with a focus on performance diagnostics and training control. Over the past decades, the field of physical activity, exercise and sport have received increasing attention in our contemporary society, whether that is in the form of recreational activities, professional sport or as a health promoting strategy to prevent diseases. Specifically, the health- and fitness industry, outdoor- and trend sports as well as extreme sports are on demand. Research demonstrates that regular physical activity and sport can prevent the onset of diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, mental diseases etc.

Health promotion and training are of growing importance
In the wake of demographic change, it is necessary to engage large sections of the population to adopt a more active and healthy lifestyle. Health insurance funds have realized this need and encourage and subsidize their members in the participation of sport- and health courses.Whether in the private sector or in workplace health promotion, the transfer of expertise in the area of health and fitness training is playing an increasingly important role. Hundreds of health- and fitness institutions emerge annually and enrollment continuous to increase to more than ten million in Germany alone.

High growth rates
Compared with other European countries, this relatively small number of the total population only indicates the expected increases in the next decade. To respond to such demand, the health- and fitness market require highly qualified trainers, instructors and coaches. Besides, there are approximately 90,000 sport clubs in Germany and numerous research institutes and sport organizations many of which are in need of qualified staff with an academic background in sport sciences.
