Culture Day in the Department of Art, Society and Health

As part of the 10th anniversary of the MSH Medical School Hamburg, the Department of Art, Society and Health is organizing a performative cultural day on October 11th, 2019 at the Harburg campus »Arts and Social Change«.

Acts, presentations and performances provide insight into our courses of study at the hybrid interface of art, culture and social issues. In the atelier and studio rooms, students can see current final projects of students and experience exemplary forms of intervention and cultural tools that are already implemented successfully in professional practice.

You are cordially invited to get a taste for the unique atmosphere of our campus in the former soap factory, to dedicate some time for culture over a cup of coffee or to take part in an exchange of ideas with teachers and students.

Participating in Culture - »Art Analogues Coaching Tools«

Station 1 »Sound is everything/Everything is sound«

The sound workstation enables the exploration of sound with everyday objects. What sounds and sound qualities are hidden in objects that we use every day? Can we discover something new in things that we thought to know through and through?

By working at the sound workstation, sounds can be discovered, amplified and modified. Auditory experience mixes with physical movement and tactile perception - even the elements of the workstation begin to move. Through trial and error and improvisation, coaching-clients can make new experiences through artistic action. How does YOUR improvisation sound and how does YOUR first piece of music sound? How do YOU proceed and what do YOU experience?

Participants: Visitors, guests, audience

Direction: Jochen Reich, musician, lecturer, student of the Master's programme in Art Analog Coaching

When and where? 2 pm, 3:20 pm and 4:40 pm in seminar room 1

Station 2 »Impulse and Effect«

Gelatine, water, ink. An experimental station guided by experience in which the blurriness, depths and lengths of randomness are sounded out, observed and analysed. An impulse and its effect. Made visible through reduction, enlargement and repeatability. An artistic coaching format that focuses on attention on perception.

Participating in Culture - »Room and Poetry«

Station 1 »Room choreographed«
A lecture performance on the relationship between intermediality and performativity in public space. What if this was a lecture performance and public space was its performer? Would you take a seat at the bus stop and watch? I sit down on the bench and suddenly I see the green asphalt. I smell the freshly mown lawn between the passing cars. The words slip past me.

Contributors: Visitors, Guests, Audience
Head: Prof. Dr. med. Lucia Rainer Wichmann, Professor of Aesthetics

When and where? 5 pm to 5:30 pm in the seminar room 2

Station 2 »Poetomat« - Poetry on request
A poetry project by and with alumni and students. Visitors can write a wishful note on a card and insert it with a euro in the Poetomat. After a short time, the output of an individual, unique poem for the impulse word takes place.

When and where? From 2 pm in the studio 4

Station 3 »Writing Center«
Presentation and information about the competence center, which develops tools, professional writing methods and text editing strategies as well as space and time for writing and language development.

Exhibition »Art and Space«

Students in 6th semester of the Expressive Arts in Social Transformation program react with artistic approaches to a place. This results in aesthetic dialogues with space as a counterpart. Dialogues that can be quiet, cautious, energetic, demanding, subtle or loud. A wide variety of documentations of this artistic research and the resulting interventions in public space will be shown.

Contributors: Final presentation by students of the Bachelor's programme Expressive Arts in Social Transformation (EAST 2016)

Director: Prof. Sandra Freygarten, Professor for Art in Social Organisations and Change Processes

Prof. Dr. Jan Sonntag, Professor of Music Therapy

When and where? From 2 pm in studio 3

Exhibition »Experiencing Artistic Processes in Art«

Selected visual works from different student cohorts in Expressive Arts in Social Transformation show exemplary themes and artistic approaches in the field of fine arts. Both analogue and digital formats are processed in the classroom: Painterly, graphic, plastic, installative and experimental approaches as well as working in interaction will be developed alongside film/photo/websites and the like. In this small insight, however, space is given above all to analog and thus haptically perceptible results and process impressions.

Participants: Students of the Bachelor's programme Expressive Arts in Social Transformation (EAST).

Director: Anne von Hoyningen-Huene, Lecturer for Visual Arts

When and where? From 2 pm in studio 5

Direction: Prof. Kerstin Hof, Professor of Art and Society - Focus on Poetry

Prof. Dr. Jan Sonntag, Professor of Music Therapy

When and where? 6 pm to 7 pm in the seminar room 2

Performance »Have a seat!«

Students of the second semester explored the connection between function and cultural-historical significance on the basis of the everyday object »chair«. The focus was on qualities of everyday use and their artistic alienation (sitting, occupying, possessing) as well as on the examination of symbolic attributions of meaning: The chair as a symbol of power, as a symbol of prosperity for an aspiring bourgeoisie, or as a symbol of social protest forms such as sit-in.

The results of this artistic research will be shown in the form of a performance.
