Professor Thomas Schnell studied psychology at the University of Heidelberg and successfully graduated with a diplom in Psychology (equiv. M.S.) in 2002. In 2007, he received the psychological psychotherapist accreditation with focus on behavioural therapy at the DGVT in Bonn. In line with scientific work at the psychiatric university clinic in Cologne he completed two doctoral theses: a medical thesis focused on the challenges of cognitive performance deficits in patients with schizophrenia. The second, science-based thesis focused on co-morbidity of schizophrenia and addictive disorders. In relation to psychotherapeutical extra qualifications, Professor Schnell completed the dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT) and the special psychotraumatherapy, based on the specifications of the German-speaking Society for Psychotraumatology (DeGPT). From 2008-2011, Professor Schnell was psychological director at a psychiatric expert clinic in Köln (LVR Clinic) and at a ward for the so called double diagnosis patients (psychosis and addiction). For this cohort, Professor Schnell developed a therapeutical manual which was published in 2007 and finds application since. A further role of Professor Schnell was the guidance and supervision of psychologists who completed their practical year at the LVR-Clinic in Cologne. 


Since 2007, Professor Schnell is lecturer for four educational institutes in the region of Bonn and Cologne. Here, he focuses on the topics of schizophrenia, personality disorders with focus on borderline disorders, consequential trauma disorders (heavy complex traumas), eating disorders, obsessive compulsive disorders, psychotherapy in the psychiatry as well as foundations of behavioural therapy. Further, Professor Schnell is frequently seen at psychiatric-psychotherapeutical conferences where he leads workshops and gives presentations (e.g. DGPPN-congress in Berlin; Annual congress Psychotherapy in Bochum). For the winter semester 2011/2012 he was appointed Professor in Clinical Psychology and Behavioural Therapy at MSH Medical School Hamburg.

Research Focus

For his doctoral thesis, Professor Thomas Schnell conducted research in the field of co-morbidity of psychosis and addiction.

In a further research project he examines the consumption behavior of cannabis (motivational factors in psychosis patients in comparison to elsewhere healthy consumers, aspects of cravings (addiction pressure). In another current research project he evaluates the therapeutical concepts for double diagnosed patients and in a further research projects he investigates in the risk factors for the development of post-traumatic disorders in victims of heavy road accidents.
