Biography

Lutz Koch studied human medicine at the University of Marburg and received his MBA in health economy in Bayreuth. He then received the entitlement Specialist for Child- and Adolescent Medicine, focus on neonatology and further training on special pediatric intensive care medicine at the centre for child- and adolescent medicine at the University Hospital Heidelberg. Lutz Koch completed his doctoral studies (Promotion) in the field of pharmacology and his post-doctoral studies (Habilitation) on the topic »Molekulare und zelluläre Mechanismen in der adulten und neonatalen Sepsis« (equiv. molecular and cellular mechanisms in adult and neonatal sepsis). After many years as assistant medical director and medical director in the Klinikum for Neonatology at the  Centre for Child- and Adolescent Medicine (Klinikum für Neonatologie am Zentrum für Kinder- und Jugendmedizin) in Heidelberg, he was head of department in the neonatology, paediatric intensive care and burn trauma centre at the Catholic Children's Hospital Wilhelmstift in Hamburg.

Teaching

Since 2010, Lutz Koch teaches medical students of the University Heidelberg in the subject pediatrics (clinical work with patient, seminar pediatrics). Since January 2016, he is lecturer at MSH Medical School Hamburg. In 2017, he was appointed professor for Social Medicine at the Department Family, Child and Social Work. His teaching focuses on medical foundations, child- and adolescent medicine and neonatology.

Research

His primary research focuses on the fields of infection and sepsis in premature infants and newborns. Special focus of his work is the examination of molecular and cellular mechanisms in the adult and neonatal sepsis, uncovering the underlying processes.
