From 1990-1996, Professor Thorsten Kienast studied human medicine at the Free University of Berlin and at the University of London. In 2000, he completed his doctoral degree and in 2009, he completed the additional degree of Master of Business Administration Health Care Management, at the Berlin School of Economics and Law. In 2004, he resumed leadership for the scientific management in the field of therapy development and neurobiology in addictions and personality disorders in the Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the Charité Campus Mitte. From 2010-2012, he was chief medical doctor in the Department for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy of the Schön Klinik Hamburg Eilbek. Since 2011, he undertakes additional doctoral studies in the Department of Controlling and Business Administration at the University of Hohenheim. He further completed additional training in sleep disorders. Since 2012, he is actively involved with consultancy functions in the consultancy firm Ernst & Young Ltd. Deutschland, in the field of health care providers. From 2013-2015, he was medical director at the Max Grundig Klinik Bühl and was chief medical director in the Department for Psychosomatics, Psychiatry and Psychotherapy. Since 2015, he has a lecturer position at the Charité Campus Mitte, the Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy.


Since 2004, Professor Kienast is lecturer in the degree Medical Neurosciences at the Charité Berlin. He is also involved in teaching as a certified supervisor and teaching therapist since 2007. Furthermore, he is lecturer in the working group scientific psychotherapy (AWP) of the DDBT in the master degree addictive medicine at the Catholic University of Applied Sciences Cologne and in the degree human medicine at the University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf since 2007. Since 2010, he is teaches for the universities Charité Berlin and the UKE Hamburg.

Research Focus

Since 2003, Professor Kienast works in the field of neurobiology and psychotherapy of motivational disorders and emotional regulations. He further develops and evaluates treatment concepts for patients with personality disorders and co-morbid addiction disorders. He also conceptualizes a curriculum for training therapists to become DBT addiction therapists.
