Henning Budde has studied Physical Education and Biology in Kiel, Cologne and Bielefeld and received his doctorate at the Free University Berlin. After two years of successful teachers training (mandatory in Germany), he worked as a high school teacher in Hamburg while being involved in neuroscience research projects. From 2006-2011 he did his post doc at the Department of Training and Movement Sciences (Humboldt Universität zu Berlin). After that, he was a visiting professor for Physical Education at the University of Suwon (South Korea) and an Assistant Professor at the Department of Sport Science at Reykjavik University (Iceland). Since the winter semester 2012/2013 he is Full-Professor for Sport Science and Research Methodology at the MSH Medical School Hamburg. In 2014 he finished his »Habilitation« the highest academic degree in Germany at the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin.

Henning Budde´s teaching experience is based on his 2-years teachers training and 4 ½ -years tenure as a teacher of biology and P.E. at a High School in Hamburg (Germany). Since the winter semester 2006/07, he taught exercise science, motor control and motor learning as well as sport didactics in lectures and seminars at BA and MA level. He also was responsible for the accreditation of new degree programs at the Humboldt University in Berlin as well as at the Reykjavik University. Internationally he taught at many Universities abroad within the Erasmus Teaching Mobility program. As part of his Visiting Professorship in South Korea, he gave lectures and seminars with a health educational focus. At Reykjavik University, he taught graduate students in exercise science. Now he teaches the subjects neuroscience, research methods and sports science at the Medical School Hamburg (MSH).

Research focus

Research interest of Henning Budde is the field of exercise neuroscience. He is dealing with the effects of exercise on the brain and how the brain induced movements. As a teacher he is interested how these findings can be implemented in school settings.

He has published over 100 articles in peer reviewed journals. Some of these articles are communicated as »most cited articles« (e.g. in Neuroscience Letters) or as a »hot topic« articles (e.g. at the Neuroscience Meeting 2007 and 2013). In addition, he collaborates with institutes in Germany (including the Technical University of Dresden and WWU Münster) and abroad (UFRJ Rio de Janeiro, UFSC Florianópolis (Brazil), Foro Italico, Rome (Italy), University of Suwon (South Korea), Reykjavik University (Iceland) and University of Bern (Switzerland) and presented more than 100 times on national and international congresses.

Henning Budde raised external funding in many areas, including the DFG projects »Additional exercise at school, effects on cognitive performance, emotional status, and steroid hormones«, as well as one with the focus on brain activity.

Furthermore, Henning Budde is member of several scientific associations, such as  European College of Sport Science (ECSS). In June 2017 he received an honorary doctor at the Lithuanian Sport University.

He is also reviewer for numerous international journals, such as
