Professor Astrid Junge obtained her doctorate in psychology, is accredited psychotherapist and completed her habilitation (equiv. post-doc dissertation) in the field of social- and preventive medicine. Since December 2013, she is Professor for Prevention and Sport at MSH Medical School Hamburg. Here, she was Vice-rector for Research from 2015 to 2020.
Following her studies, she has worked in research and education for the duration of 14 years at the University of Hamburg and at the University of Marburg in the areas of psychosomatics, sexual medicine and medical psychology / sociology. She conducted studies on quality management within the psychosomatic and orthopaedic departments of private hospitals. From 1996-2016, she was head of research of the medical research center of the FIFA (F-MARC) and made major contributions to the establishment of F-MARC and to the development of the Centre into an internationally recognized research organization.
Professor Junge is involved in a large number of projects with international sport associations (FINA, FIFA, IAAF, IOC), other universities and research groups in Germany and abroad.
Professor Astrid Junge lectured in the field of social- and preventive medicine at the University of Zurich. She also taught the course ‘psychosomatics’ over several semesters in the Department for Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf
At the University of Marburg, she initiated an interdisciplinary series of lectures on "sexual medicine" for medical students and for students of psychology, and received a teaching assignment for this course at the Department of Human Medicine. Both, at the University of Hamburg and at the University of Marburg, Professor Astrid Junge taught the course "Medical Psychology / Medical Sociology" for several semesters.
Professor Astrid Junge’s research activities encompass a variety of research fields. Currently, her research focuses on epidemiology and prevention of injuries in professional and amateur sports, mental health of elite athletes, as well as on physical and mental health of dancers.
In line with her work for international sport associations, Professor Junge leads a variety of research projects on epidemiology, risk factors and prevention of sport injuries. She was involved in the development of methods on the standardized registration of sport injuries and related consensus statements.
Another focus of her work (2009-2016) was the development, implementation and evaluation of a sport-based health promotion program for children in Africa, Asia, Oceania and Latin America.
Previous research- and work areas (1986-2008) include quality management in medical, psychosomatic and psychotherapeutic care; development, validation and trans-cultural adaption of questionnaires; studies on the measurement and prediction of treatment success in spine operations and on the measurement of quality of life of chronically ill patients.
