Biography

In 1984, Professor Olaf Schenk completed a vocational training to become a recognized nurse. He then proceeded with a further education module and became a specialist nurse for anesthesia and intensive care and then worked in different areas of the intensive care unit and in the anesthesiologic service of the HELIOS clinic Wuppertal. From 1996-1999, he managed the heart surgery intensive care unit. From 1999-2001, Professor Schenk served as consultant for nursing and care and later became a sales support specialist with the company Hill-Rom Therapy GmbH. From 2002-2011, he managed the further education modules in the intensive care unit and anesthesia at HELIOS Bildungszentrum Wuppertal. In 2011-2012, Professor Schenk was head of various education modules of non-medical professions in the HELIOS Konzernzentrale. In 2013, he worked for the regional personnel management sector of the HELIOS region. Since 2014, he works fully as Professor for Advanced Nursing Practice and is head of department at MSH Medical School Hamburg.

From 2002-2006, Professor Schenk studied nursing education at the Catholic University of Applied Sciences of North Rhine-Westphalia and graduated as Diplom-Berufspädagoge (equiv. M.A. Education). He completed his doctoral degree with the Witten/Herdecke University (Dr rer medic)

Teaching

Professor Schenk lectured at the SRH University of Health Gera and taught in the modules nursing and medical pedagogy. Further he was lecturer at the Fresenius University of Applied Sciences Idstein in the Department for Economics and Media. Since 2010, Professor Schenk is Programme Director of the degree Advanced Nursing Practice at MSH Medical School Hamburg.

Research Focus

In line with his doctoral research in the faculty of health at the University of Witten/Herdecke, Professor Schenk investigated in the interplay of social competence and the feeling of coherence in trainees of health- and nursing degrees.

Professor Schenk conducts research in the areas of care and health care systems, concepts and theories of nursing- -and health sciences, professional self-concept, professional education and competence development in the nursing and health care professions.
