Biography

Thomas Gronwald completed his Diplom (equiv. M.Sc.) in Sport Sciences with focus on »Prevention, Rehabilitation and Therapy« at the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg from 2004-2008. Shortly thereafter, he commenced his doctoral studies in the field »Sport Sciences and Sports Medicine«. In 2015, he completed additional part-time studies and graduated with an MBA with focus on »Health Care Management« at the University of Bayreuth.

Thomas Gronwalk worked as academic staff in the Department Sport Science at the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg from 2011-2015 in the working group »Sport Sciences and Sports Medicine«. He then proceeded to the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg and accepted the professor ad interim position on Sport Sciences and coordinated the field theory and praxis of the different sport disciplines. On a volunteer basis, Thomas Gronwald also managed extra training and education modules for coaches of the Basketball Union Saxony Anhalt.

Outside the university setting, Thomas Gronwald gained in-depths insights into the field of human movement- and sport therapy as well as into performance diagnostics and training guidance processes of individual- and team athletes. He is experienced in workplace health management of middle-sized enterprises at the institute for performance diagnostics and health promotion.

In 2015, Thomas Gronwald was appointed professor in sports- and human movement sciences at the H:G University of Health & Sports, Technology & Arts. He also acted as Faculty Dean for Sport Sciences.

Teaching

Thomas Gronwald has teaching experience with undergraduate- and graduate students, as well as with teaching degree students at the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg, at the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg and at the H:G University of Health & Sports, Technology & Arts. As academic staff in the Department Sport Sciences at the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg, he was responsible for the methodological-practical exercises, for lectures, seminars and project work. At the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, he acted as ad interim professor in sport sciences. He covered all modules in the field of sport sciences at the H:G University of Health & Sports, Technology & Arts, including load- and regeneration control, long-term performance building, performance diagnostics, programme planning, as well as modules on health promotion through physical activity and research methods.

Research focus

Primary research interests of Thomas Gronwald are applied training- and sport sciences, with a special focus on the preventative aspect of training, and on load control in the fitness-, health- and high performance sport sector.

With a preventative and health scientific approach, Thomas Gronwald specifically focuses on load control in recreation-, leisure- and high performance sports. In his doctoral work he focused on the impact of different load norms on the central nervous activation state during training load. This focus let him draw conclusions for a relevant training guidance for both recreational- and high performance athletes. Subsequent research explored whether adjustments occur on the central nervous level in the functional field, in addition to the immediate reactions. One of his research studies that explored the impact of limited oxygen supply on the central nervous activation in cyclists, was granted the emerging researcher award by the Deutsche Vereinigung für Sportwissenschaft (equiv. German Association for Sport Sciences).
