Biography

Professor Jan Sonntag studied at the Gesamthochschule Kassel (today University of Kassel, social sciences), at the University of Applied Sciences Heidelberg and at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg (doctoral degree music therapy).

Jan Sonntag is music therapist (FH/DMtG), alternative practitioner for psychotherapy and yoga instructor (BDY/EYU). Since 1999, he works primarily in the area of dementia, as therapist, researcher, consultant, lecturer and author. In addition to the music therapeutical work in a number of health care institutions, he substantially contributed to the organization and conceptual development of music therapy in patients with dementia in Hamburg and beyond. Jan Sonntag teaches in academic and other educational institutions and consults health care clinics - among others well established institutes. He is member of the Deutsche Expertengruppe Dementenbetreuung (DED) (equiv. German expert group dementia support), author of the book “Demenz und Atmosphäre. Musiktherapie als ästhetische Arbeit“, co-author of the foundation work „Musik – Demenz – Begegnung. Musiktherapie für Menschen mit Demenz” and editor of the music therapeutical review. In collaboration with his wife, he manages the practice “Alte Wache” in Hamburg.

His key interest for practically relevant research and teaching as well as intermedial art work in social professions took him to the Department of Art and Society at MSH Medical School Hamburg in 2013.

Teaching

Professor Jan Sonntag has a broad range of experiences in teaching at different academic institutions. He taught “Social Work” at the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences in the bachelor degree, as well as “Music Therapy in Social Work” in the further education module at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences. At MSH Medical School Hamburg, he teaches “Expressive Arts in Social Transformation”, focusing on music.

Publications

Key focus of his previous research work is music therapy in relation to dementia and atmosphere. Topic covered include: atmosphere, dementia, music therapy, ecological and social aspects of therapies, conceptualization of artistic therapies, soundscape, sound art and sound design; dementia and civil society.

Research Focus

Since 1999, he works primarily in the area of dementia, as therapist, researcher, consultant, lecturer and author, primarily in the area of dementia. In addition to the music therapeutical work in a number of health care institutions in Hamburg, he substantially contributed to the organization and conceptual development of music therapy in patients with dementia in Hamburg and beyond. Based on the qualitative evaluation of his longstanding music therapeutical practice in the area of dementia, he developed the atmosphere approach in music therapy. This approach is internationally picked up and is continuously being further developed and enhanced in line with the project Healing Soundscape (Hochschule für Musik und Theater, University Medical Centre Hamburg Eppendorf)
