Biography

Sebastian Adrian studied social work emphasizing education at the University of Kassel. He also studied international criminology in the Department of Social Sciences at the University of Hamburg. During his social work studies he worked as an emergency medical technician in the emergency service department of the city of Kassel for the duration of six years.

From 2008 until 2014, Sebastian Adrian worked as a social education worker in and around Hamburg. Focus of his practical work was the reintegration to the school system, social family support and individual case support before he conceptualized and conducted gender-specific social work with boys, school cooperation projects and addiction prevention work in line with the Open Children- and Adolescent Work in the district of Steilshoop (Offenen Kinder- und Jugendarbeit im Hamburger Quartier Steilshoop). Besides, Sebastian Adrian managed the Drug Advisory Service of the respective supporting public authority. After completion of his practical work he continued to be involved as a directorate for the public authority.

During his studies of international criminology, Sebastian Adrian started to conduct research at the Hans-Bredow-Institute for Media Research at the University of Hamburg in 2014. Here, he worked on qualitative and quantitative research projects in the field of Media Pedagogy and Media Participation.

Teaching

In line with his work as qualified social education worker, Sebastian Adrian taught secondary school students from grade 5-8 in Hamburg. In his social-pedagogical cooperation projects that he conceptualized, the topics of social skills, addiction prevention, gender-specific sex education and creative work were emphasized.

During his final phase at the University of Hamburg, Sebastian Adrian got involved with teaching at the College of Administration and Services in Altenholz in Kiel in the Police division for vocational education in the upper police service in Schleswig-Holstein. Focus of the teaching assignment was the teaching of criminological foundations, as well as violence in police procedures.

Since 2017, Sebastian Adrian is Academic Staff with focus on teaching at the Medical School Hamburg. Here, he brings his practical experiences from his social pedagogical work and from his background of social sciences and media research with qualitative and quantitative research methods into the classroom.

Research Focus

Research focus of Sebastian Adrian is primarily in the field of ethnographical social areas- and criminology research of urban living spaces. He is involved with research that questions the role of influence of social spaces to the socialization of young people and the social societal impact of diverging living- and behavior modes, as well as the emergence of sub-cultures.

Further, he investigates in criminal offences in the internet and online criminal prosecution of German law enforcement agencies.
