Ilona Renken-Olthoff, CEO of MSH Medical School Hamburg
Ilona Renken-Olthoff exclusively combines her technical expertise with pedagogical aptitude and skills. Following her studies to become a school teacher, Ilona Renken-Olthoff was able to make hands-on experiences in communicating knowledge in the education sector. With the experiences and passion from the field of education, she founded a number of innovative educational enterprises situated on the interplay of health and pedagogy.
One of her first achievements was the Educational Center for Medical Therapeutic Professions in Gera. A number of state-approved vocational schools with specific focus on seven different health- and social professions are placed under the umbrella of this organization.
With her specific expertise, her national- and international networks in the health care sector, her experience in establishing and founding academic institutions and lastly, with her dynamic personality, Ilona Renken-Olthoff meets all requirements for a successful entrepreneur.
Under the auspices of Ilona Renken-Olthoff, the first private, state-approved University of Applied Sciences was then founded in Thuringen in 2007. With 18 different degrees and successful accreditation by the German Science and Humanities Council, the University has established itself as a known entity in the federal education sector in Germany. As such, Ilona Renken-Olthoff has considerably contributed to the development of the »Initiative Neue Ärzte« (equiv. Initiative for new doctors) that stands for the adjustment of medical specialist training to meet the current challenges of the health care sector. In 2009, Ilona Renken-Olthoff finalized the project lead of this initiative.
In December 2009, Ilona Renken-Olthoff founded the state-approved »BSP Business School Berlin - Hochschule für Management« in the capital region Berlin-Brandenburg, located in the historic city of Potsdam. Since winter semester 2012, the BSP Business School Berlin is located in the historical Siemens Villa in Berlin Steglitz and has a campus in the HafenCity district in Hamburg since 2013. BSP offers seven Bachelor- and seven Master degrees with innovative, market-oriented and interdisciplinary courses. Core focus is on management and business psychology. Currently, 1,250 students are enrolled at BSP.
Simultaneously in 2009, she founded and established the MSH Medical School Hamburg - University of Applied Sciences and Medical University in the city of Hamburg. The MSH is a private, state-approved University in the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, located in the HafenCity district. The institution was initially founded with the Faculty of Health Sciences as a University of Applied Sciences. Until today, the courses of studies have expanded and meanwhile 13 Bachelor, twelve Master degrees and one state examination degree course, characterized by strong practically-oriented approaches are offered. In 2013, the Faculty of Life Sciences received University status. More than 3,000 students are enrolled at MSH Medical School Hamburg. The University is home of many renowned leading academics, not least due to our highly motivated, performance-oriented and talented students.
The profile of MSH is characterized by an inter-professional training in medicine, health care and all interdisciplinary professions. Further to this, MSH has its own academic clinic which gives first-hand access to hands-on teaching and research. To further advance the training of psychological psychotherapists, the HIP Hafencity Institute was established in winter semester 2015/2016. Trainees can chose between behavioural therapy and in-depth psychologically-grounded psychotherapy as well as analytical psychotherapy. These elective modules completed the cross-educational approach of our teaching. Since 2012, the application process for the establishment of the state examination degree in human medicine and thus a close cooperation with the HELIOS hospitals in Schwerin has been running for MSH. In April there was the positive vote of the Science Council. Start of studies is in winter term 2019/2020.
And to round up these unique campus atmospheres that we create with our staff and students, the MSB Medical School Berlin - Hochschule für Gesundheit und Medizin, situated in the Siemens Villa, also offers Bachelor- and Master degrees. The Faculty of Health Sciences currently delivers five Bachelor degrees and one Master degree, characterized by application-oriented approaches. The Faculty of Sciences, on the other hand, is a university faculty that offers scientific courses of studies leading to scientific degrees. As such, students at MSB can also choose between the degree of a University of Applied Sciences or a scientific degree and can therefore shape their career based on their individual talents and strengths. Currently, 1450 students are enrolled at MSB. Teaching and research is further facilitated by the psychotherapeutic academic clinic since 2018. The institute for integrative psychotherapy training Berlin, currently in the process of accreditation, provides ample opportunities for our graduates to undertake further training to become a psychological psychotherapist.
