Is a degree from the MSH recognised on a par with one from a state university of applied sciences?
The Medical School Hamburg (MSH) is state-recognised by the Hamburg Senate. This guarantees that our degrees are of a value equal to the degrees from state universities of applied sciences.
Are performances from other universities credited and recognised at the MSH?
Yes. In principle, there exists the opportunity to recognise examination performances from other universities. The examination commission makes a decision on a case-by-case basis.
What is ECTS?
The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) should ensure that the performances of students at universities of the European Higher Education Area are comparable and are creditable when changing from one university to another, even to one in another country. The MSH degree programmes are therefore aligned with ECTS.
What are CPs?
CPs (credit points) are performance points that the students acquire during the course by successfully participating in modules. A total of 180 CPs must be acquired for the Bachelor's degree.
Behind each CP lies a workload of approximately 30 working hours. A module with 5 CPs, for instance, therefore comprises a workload of 150 hours (consisting of study by way of attending lectures and self-study).
How long does the course last?
The undergraduate Bachelor's degree programmes result in a degree after 6 semesters of full-time study; with part-time study, the course lasts a total of 9 semesters.
A degree is awarded in Master's courses after 4 semesters in the full-time model and after 6 semesters when studying part-time.
When does the course start?
The degree programmes at the Medical School Hamburg(MSH) start once a year on 1 October. We also offer the Applied Psychology Bachelor's degree programme and the Intermedia Art Therapy and Innovative Change Processes Master's degree programmes on 1 April.
Are there semester holidays?
Our academic year is organised into semesters. There are semester holidays twice a year, at the end of each semester.
Full-Time Study
The lectures take place from Monday to Friday in 90-minute blocks between the hours of 9 am and 7 pm. In exceptional cases and elective subjects, the lectures can also be held outside these times. The lectures are planned 1 semester in advance.
Part-Time Study
The lectures are organised into block weeks (Thursday to Monday). There are five block weeks per semester.
How are my course achievements tested?
The contents of the courses are tested after each module in the form of written papers, oral examinations, presentations, reports, seminar papers or assignments. The examination form with which a module concludes is clearly set out in the degree programme examination regulations and can also be found in the information material of the degree programmes.
Can I repeat examinations?
Yes. If you do not pass an examination, you can generally repeat it up to two times at a later date. You will find more detailed provisions in our general examination regulations and in the degree programme's study and examination regulations.
Are there course funding opportunities?
Yes. Banks and savings banks are now prepared to give out student loans. A multitude of banks and savings banks supports students by way of special funding offers. Foundations award grants to fund courses.

Yes, for full-time degree programmes you can apply for student financial support.
Are the subject materials/books provided by the university?
Every lecturer generally works with textbooks and/or scripts. The textbooks can be borrowed from the university library if they are available. You receive the lecturers' scripts as hand-outs and files on the Intranet.
Do students of the university get a student ID and what
benefits are there?
Yes, you get a student ID, which offers you discounts for entry to events (cinema, theatre, museum, etc.).
Is there an NC (Numerus clausus, restricted admission) at the MSH?
No. We conduct an admission procedure, which reproduces a holistic profile of applicants and makes it possible to get to know them on a personal level. The decision as to whether to allow an applicant to study at the MSH is based on the admission procedure.
Do you need to undergo work experience before starting the course?
Yes. For the Applied Psychology and Transdisiplinary Early Intervention Bachelor's degree programmes, pre-study work experience sessions at a welfare or healthcare facility lasting 1 or 3 months are required.
